Barn destroyed after suspects crash stolen vehicle in Renton

A vehicle stolen by burglary suspects crashed into a barn in Renton early Thursday morning.

RENTON, Wash. — Police are investigating after a car stolen by suspects who broke into a Renton apartment complex crashed into a barn in Renton.

The incident started around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday when officers with the Renton Police Department responded to a report of a pizza delivery driver being robbed at a condo complex along Petrovitsky Road.

Police said the delivery driver described the suspects as “two juvenile males.” The suspects reportedly pointed a gun at the victim and demanded their vehicle.

When the suspects were unable to operate the car, police said the pair robbed a different victim at gunpoint in the same parking lot and stole their vehicle.

Police were later called to a home invasion robbery at a nearby apartment complex with suspects matching the description of the subjects in the previous carjacking. The suspects entered an apartment through an open window and stole several items of value, while pointing a gun at a juvenile victim who lived inside, police said.

Renton police said officers responding to the home invasion robbery located the suspect’s vehicle driving westbound on Petrovitsky Road at a high rate of speed. Renton police said the officer did not initiate a pursuit of the vehicle. It was last seen traveling west past the intersection of Benson Drive.

The vehicle was found about a mile away after it crashed into a building on Southeast Carr Road, not far from New Horizon School. The crash caused significant damage to the building and partially collapsed onto the vehicle.

Renton police said the suspects barricaded themselves inside the partially collapsed structure. Responding officers set up a containment area and were eventually able to detain found people inside. Two of the people detained were arrested after the victims of the armed robbery and attempted carjacking were able to positively identify the suspects. The ages of those arrested are currently unknown.

Police said a BB gun was recovered from the top of the vehicle inside the partially collapsed structure.

Two of the juvenile suspects are expected to be charged with two counts of first-degree robbery, attempted auto theft and first-degree burglary, according to Renton police. Additional charges could be added if investigators discover other victims or suspects.

A tow truck was called to the scene, and the stolen vehicle was removed from inside the barn. The removal of the vehicle caused the structure to partially collapse further.
