On Tuesday, we got to look at how the Reser Stadium renovations are coming along. Wednesday, the Beavers practiced on that field.
And we found out why this was an important session so early in camp.
Wednesday felt like a major milestone in Oregon State fall camp, practicing at Reser for the first time.
The team did a lot of live hitting drills for the first time this year. Now, when it comes to this team's toughness, the offensive line tends to be the group that sets the tone. And here's what that group's leader thought about their physicality today.
"I thought it was okay. You know, I thought it was good. I think we could be better, you know?” said Jim Michalczik, the Beavers offensive line coach since 2018. “You ask about this group, the great thing about these linemen is that room has high expectations. They have high goals. And so, it's really fun to coach them that way."
Three starters return from a unit that finished as a finalist for the Joe Moore Award last year. So the bar remains high.
Quarterback is another position carrying some expectations right now. Though he hasn’t been officially named the starter yet, Chance Nolan now has 15 career starts under his belt.
"I think just my overall understanding of the scheme, what we're doing and where my guys are supposed to be, I think it's been pretty good, this camp so far, and I’m just working to build the days," says Nolan.
On Wednesday, he and the receivers were repeatedly challenged by a veteran-laden defensive back group.
Safety Kitan Oladapo was particularly disruptive at batting balls away. But the offense isn’t getting discouraged.
"You've got to flush everything that happens the play before. You throw an interception. No matter what happens, you've got to play the next play, because you never know, you could get the ball back in three plays and be on the field."
"That's what we need in the wideout room is learning how to finish, learning how to remember who you are and just play football,” says senior wide receiver Tyjon Lindsey. “And that's honestly what we teach in the room. Just be yourself."
One of the next big tests for this team will be a full speed scrimmage on Saturday.
