He doesn’t want to be called a hero, but his actions were heroic.A Lakeland man pulled a woman from her car after she drove it into a swimming pool Wednesday morning. It happened in the Sand Piper Golf and Country Club subdivision.Lakeland Police say the original call came in at 7:43 a.m. Maurice Dionne heard a crash outside his home. When he stepped out of his garage, he saw the vehicle in the swimming pool. The driver went through the fenced area and into the pool.Dionne ran across the parking lot and literally jumped in. The car was in the deep end of the pool, collecting water. The driver still had her seat belt on.“She was getting nervous and I said, ‘Calm down now. We can take care of this. Stay calm,'” Dionne said.The driver door was stuck, but the window was down. Dionne had an idea to pull the car towards the shallow end of the pool.A few minutes later, another neighbor ran over and together they pulled the woman out through the window. She was shaken, but okay.Dionne told 8 On Your Side that he once served in the Coast Guard and has experience with water rescues.“It brought me back to my 22-year-old age where I was doing those things without even thinking in the Coast Guard,” Dionne said.He’s thankful nobody was in the pool at the time either. Dionne does not consider himself a hero.“No, of course not,” Dionne said. “Any person would do that to help someone in trouble like that.”Dionne says the woman explained that she accidentally hit the gas instead of the brake. She is expected to be OK.
