Heavy rain pounded the region Wednesday evening, drawing flash flood warnings for much of the area, including Jackson County, West Virginia, which saw some of the worst of the storms.
Floodwaters poured into Ripley Elementary School on Wednesday just weeks ahead of the new school year.
Water filled hallways, classrooms, the gym and main breaker room, causing some concern that power would need to be shut down the facility. The water began receding Wednesday night and did not reach the main switch in the breaker room, school officials said.
Jackson County Schools are set to start school on Aug. 24. It is unclear when Ripley Elementary will be reopened.
Elsewhere, high water and impassable roads were reported throughout the region Wednesday night. Flood waters are expected to continue receding Thursday as the weather clears up in most areas.
