During a Weatherford Area Economic Development Foundation meeting Wednesday, Representative for Route 66 Communities Kerry Barrick gave an update on the Route 66 Centennial in 2026.

“I feel like we are running out of time to prepare for the centennial, but Weatherford has done a great job of preparing. My job is to visit all 46 communities along Route 66,” Barrick said.

Barrick commended Weatherford for having a great community.

“This city is something everybody here should be proud of. Route 66 is important and Weatherford is special because the town has a story to tell,” Barrick said.

Barrick also said the Oklahoma Department of Transportation has been trying to preserve the original Route 66 roads.

“They are focused on patching holes and making sure Route 66 is easily accessible in our Oklahoma communities. Roadies want the authentic Route 66 experience and they want to drive the original Route 66 without any realignments or rebuilds,” Barrick said.
