A woman is dead after she was set on fire outside a Falls Church, Virginia apartment complex Wednesday afternoon, Fairfax County Police said. Now police are trying to find the person responsible.
Officers responded to the 2900 block of Willston Place around 2:45 p.m. and found the woman on fire as well as part of the apartment. At the same time, the fire department was called to the scene about a fire alarm going off.
The person who called 911 reported the domestic-related dispute and said they heard a woman screaming for help and a man fleeing the scene. Police put out a photo of a man who was deemed a person of interest.
Police have since located the person of interest and are speaking to him.
"We're hoping to solve this case and find the person that is responsible for this homicide," said Major Ed O’Carroll. "Detectives are working diligently to get all the answers that we need to actually close this case."
Detectives are working to identify the woman and determine how the person of interest is connected to her.
"This is a horrific crime. It's profoundly sad," said O'Carroll. "Our officers did everything they could to save her life."
One officer was treated for smoke inhalation. Police also initially issued a shelter in place when they arrived.
Police said they have responded to the apartment complex before for two other domestic incidents. They are trying to determine if this incident is linked with those calls.
