The race to November ignited immediately.
Democratic Gov. Tony Evers launched a multi-city, multi-day tour Wednesday alongside other prominent Democrats and his new running-mate, Rep. Sara Rodriguez who won her own primary Tuesday night for lieutenant governor.
Evers will face Republican businessman Tim Michels.
"Certainly his connection with Donald Trump is going to be an issue for him to figure out," Evers said during a stop in Milwaukee on Wednesday.
"Obviously he’s following the direction of Donald Trump. Donald Trump lost the last election. Tim Michels does not believe that race has yet been confirmed so they can much around with that all they want, and that’s going to make them look stupid."
The tour comes just hours after Tuesday's contentious Republican primary.
Michels defeated Rebecca Kleefisch to win the Republican nomination for governor after receiving an endorsement from former President Donald Trump.
"He knows we need to have new leadership in Madison and he sees a lot of similarities," Michels said during his acceptance speech Tuesday evening. "He didn't have to run for president. I don’t have to run for governor. He wanted to drain the swamp. We found out it's a really big swamp, and I know Madison needs firm executive leadership, and that's what I’m going to do as governor."
Michels will run alongside State Sen. Roger Roth and is wasting no time going after Evers.
"I'll tell you what, Tony Evers has failed the people of Wisconsin from COVID to Kenosha," Michels said. "He's been a weak leader and we are going to make him an unessential worker come November."
