A 57-year-old motorcyclist died two days after a head-on collision in Smithfield with a driver who state police say was driving recklessly.

Virginia State Police responded to the crash just after 5 p.m. Sunday on Nike Park Road, off Battery Park Road.

The preliminary investigation found that Richard Wayne Hillis, of Smithfield, was riding east on a 2022 Indian Challenger motorcycle east when a 2014 Acura struck him head-on.

The driver of the Acura, 20-year-old Justin Andrea Fatherly, of Suffolk, was making an “unsafe lane change” when he struck Hillis, said Sgt. Michelle Anaya, spokesperson for Virginia State Police, in a press release.

Hillis was taken to local hospital before he was transferred to the Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center. He died from his injuries Tuesday morning.

Fatherly was charged with reckless driving at the scene.

“At this time it does not appear that alcohol nor speed were contributing factors,” Anaya said.
