Oklahoma City police on Wednesday identified an officer and the man he shot during a standoff Tuesday in northwest Oklahoma City.

Derek Wayne Dennis, 51, remained hospitalized Wednesday. Police said he will be jailed on an assault with a deadly weapon complaint once released from the hospital.

The officer who shot Dennis, Michael Poe, will remain on administrative leave until a review is complete, a release issued by the department stated. Police spokesman Sgt. Gary Knight said Poe, a 5-year police veteran, had not shot anyone while on duty before.

Police were called to a home at 10:21 a.m. Tuesday in the 1400 block of NW 129 Terrace after being contacted by the woman who lived there. The woman, who called from Florida after seeing Dennis on the home's security system camera, said a man armed with a pistol was on the front porch.

Oklahoma City police on Wednesday identified an officer and a man involved in a shooting in northwest Oklahoma City on Tuesday.

Police said the woman said she knew Dennis and that he should not be there.

Officers arrived to find Dennis armed with a pistol and standing outside of the home. Police said Dennis refused officers’ commands to drop the pistol, and officers backed away.

Police said they negotiated with Dennis for two hours. During negotiations, police said Dennis fired his pistol toward a nearby pond.

Poe shot Dennis at 12:27 p.m. as he made what police described as a threatening move.

The woman who called 911 and Dennis were in a previous relationship the woman had ended, according to police.
