Del City first responders surrounded the high school, reminding drivers to slow down.
Wednesday was the first day back to school for thousands of students. It was also the first day back to obeying school zone safety laws for drivers.
KOCO 5 clocked cars going through the zone at 50 miles per hour. When the lights come on, drivers will have to cut their speed and there are a lot of people to make sure they do.
For the first week of school, Del City police and fire will be manning school zones, reminding drivers to slow down and pay attention.
"As soon as you see the warning lights, it needs to be in your mind that you need to start slowing your speed, checking your speed," said Major Michael Arterbury, Del City Police Department.
Speeding through a Del City school zone will cost you $167 or more, but it’s not the only ticket you could get.
"They have the stop signs that come out. It’s the same as running a stop sign," Arterbury said.
Officers said Sunny Lane is one of the city’s busiest streets with the added foot traffic from Del City High School. Del City police said it’s a real concern.
"It's kind of a recipe for disaster," Arterbury said.
They advise drivers to be extra cautious this time of year and watch out for darting students, even outside normal school hours.
"We just want to get everyone to and from school safe," Arterbury said.
Officers want to remind students to not only use the crosswalk but make sure to hit lights to give drivers extra warning.
