The family of a teenager with autism who says he was shot by a shock weapon at the hands of a former Pickens County Sheriff's Deputy is now suing the office.
Attorneys and the family announced the lawsuit in front of the Greenville Federal Courthouse Wednesday. It also names the deputy who has since been relieved of his duties.
Roy Willey, of the Anastopoulo Law Firm, is the lead on the lawsuit.
He shared body camera video he obtained which he says comes from the Pickens County Sheriff's Office.
Willey said it all started on the morning of Aug. 30, 2021, when 17-year-old Aaron Vasquez was reported missing. He described Vasquez as nonverbal.
That morning, he said, someone called police, saying they saw Vasquez. Lawyers said Deputy James Trotter asked the boy his name.
"What's your name, Sanchez? Gomez? What's your name?" Trotter appears to ask in the video.
He didn't get a response and lawyers said he then used a shock weapon on the 17-year-old 17 times in about five minutes.
They said he did so despite the absence of any clear or present danger.
"Thankfully, Aaron wasn’t paralyzed but he was severely injured as a result of this altercation, both physically and mentally," Willey said.
His family, also present Wednesday for the announcement, said it's affected Aaron's daily life.
"He’s so sweet," his sister Daniella Vasquez said. "Now he has trouble sleeping at night. He throws up every morning. Every night he has so much anxiety now and it breaks my heart. I just want justice for him that’s all I have to say."
The suit also alleges Trotter lied about how many times he shocked Vasquez and that some of those shocks came while Vasquez was on the ground.
Trotter faces second-degree assault and battery and misconduct in office charges in the 13 circuit.
When asked for comment on the lawsuit, the Pickens County Sheriff's Office said it does not comment on pending litigation.
