Barbara Zitner Hanovich, 71, passed away, due to complications from Parkinson’s disease, on Tuesday, Aug. 2, 2022, in Petah Tikva, Israel.

She was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Oct. 25, 1950, and grew up in Bellmore, Long Island.

Barbara married and moved to Houston, Texas, in January 1980 and, for the life of her, she could not figure out what this Luv Ya Blue meant.

She worked for the Jewish National Fund for many years and, in 1992, started working at the Jewish Herald-Voice as the assistant graphic arts manager, where she stayed until making aliyah to Israel in 2013 with her husband, Chuck Hanovich.

Barbara was very devoted to Jewish culture and causes and served as president of the Alief/Sugar Land ORT chapter and later, president of United Orthodox Synagogues Sisterhood.

She loved going to the movies, watching television and eating Chinese food on Christmas day and spending quality time with family and friends.

While in Houston, Barbara gave her dancing, singing and silliness talent to the Press Club of Houston’s Gridiron Show for many years. Her husband even joined her in the cast for seven years. Barbara also enjoyed blues, jazz and the oldies.

Barbara is survived by her husband of 17 years, Chuck Hanovich; son, David Komer; grandaughters, Emunah and Rivka Komer, all of Modiin, Israel; brother, Alan Zitner of Sydney, Australia; and sister, Mindy Zitner Carey (Jack) of Orenton, Md., and numerous cousins.

The funeral was held on Tuesday, Aug. 2, 2022, at Modiin Cemetry, Modiin, Israel. Donations in Barbara’s memory may be made to the Houston Area Parkinson’s Society.

AUG 13, 2022  •  She was certainly multi-faceted. Sorry I never had the opportunity to discover all the sides of her. Happy I did get to reconnect with her over 20 years ago. Will definitely miss her.
