WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah — A 39-year-old man is facing felony charges after allegedly robbing two men and shooting one with a gun on Sunday.

According to court documents, Mitchell Van Halsey met with two men at a Carl’s Jr. parking lot at 3468 S., Redwood Road at approximately 1 p.m.

The two meet Halsey to buy a speaker from him, and he said he wanted to buy heroin with the money. When Halsey found out that the 41-year-old man had the money, he took out a gun, pointed it at his head and pulled the trigger, according to the documents.

The bullet grazed the man’s head, causing a wound to his scalp. After realizing he was shot, the man dropped the money, ran into Carl’s Jr., and pleaded with Halsey not to shoot him again.

Meanwhile, Halsey picked up the money, got on a bicycle, and fled the area.

Shooting suspect hospitalized after being shot by officer, police say

According to the documents, surveillance footage captured Halsey riding his bicycle to the Indoor Swap Meet at 1500 West, 3500 South, where West Valley City and Taylorsville police officers encountered him.

West Valley City police told KSL TV on Sunday that one of their officers shot Halsey during the encounter, sending him to the hospital in serious condition. No update has been provided on why the officer shot him.

Police found a pistol on Halsey’s person matching the caliber used to shoot the 41-year-old man, according to the arresting documents. He also had the speaker in the backpack he tried to sell to the victims.

On Monday, West Valley City police tweeted that Halsey was in stable condition in the hospital. The shooting victim was treated for his head wound at the Carl’s Jr.

Halsey was released from the hospital Wednesday and was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for aggravated robbery and aggravated assault resulting in serious bodily injury.
