Junior livestock sale tops $270,000

Averages were up and so was the total for this year’s Big Horn County junior livestock sale.

Not counting add-ons, bidders shelled out $270,773 for 129 animals, including 40 hogs, 40 lambs, 28 goats, 15 beef and five rabbits, according to Casey Sorenson, a member of the fair board and president of Bank of Greybull which clerked the sale.

Last year, 142 animals sold for $244,059.

In 2020, 134 animals brought $237,646.

The 15 beef that sold this year brought an average of $5.15 per pound (compared to $3.24 per pound last year).  Davi Frost had the top seller, as her steer fetched $7 per pound. Paintrock Angus was the buyer, paying $9,436.

The 40 hogs brought an average of $6.51 per pound (up from $5.55 per pound last year). Darrell Horton wouldn’t be denied, paying a whopping $17.50 per pound, $4,690 total, for the hog put up by his grandson Sy Schlattmann.

The 40 lambs brought an average of $12.43 per pound (up from $10.05 per pound last year). Kelce Winterholler had the top seller, as her lamb brought $22 per pound. It was purchased by Seedex Beet Seed and Steve Snyder for a total of $3,212.

The 28 goats sold for an average of $14.95 per pound (up from $10.98 per pound last year). The high seller per pound was Addisyn Leonhardt at $26 for a total of $1,690 with a 65-pound goat. It was purchased by Beta Seed and Billings Farmhand. The overall high seller was Garrett Dalin with a 93-pound goat sold to Ron Dalin and Busters Hay Grinding at $23 per pound for a total of $2,139.

The five rabbits that sold averaged $470 (up from $435 last year).  The high seller was Quaide Houchin at $550. It was purchased by Wyo Gains, LLC.

Paintrock Angus was the top purchaser, spending $16,948 on three animals.   Custom Air purchased the most animals (eight), totaling $12,212.
