Sara Nisha Adams’ debut novel is about the superpowers of books. The story follows the discovery of a list of books with the heading, “Just in case you need it.” The list includes To Kill a Mockingbird, Rebecca, Life of Pi, The Kite Runner, Pride and Prejudice, Little Women, A Suitable Boy and Beloved.
Mukesh’s wife has died, and he uses reading to honor her memory. Aleisha, a teenaged library clerk who is not fond of books, uses reading to help her escape her painful family life, and she finds the book list in a library book.
The two first meet at the library, where Aleisha is rude to Mukesh. As an apology, she starts to recommend books from the list to him, and they develop a strong friendship as they discuss the books. The nurturing connection of books and libraries is present on every page of this novel.
The Egg Harbor Library book club, Between the Pages, will be discussing The Reading List on Aug. 25, 10:30 am, and all are welcome.
