(WLOS) Losing a legendary coach is a tough transition. Losing a ton of offensive production is tough.
Both of them together could make the calmest soul pull their hair out.
However, the Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy Gryphons are feeling confident about replacing all that was lost after the 2021 season.
Barry Shuford, who has more than 30 years of coaching experience and 200 wins to his credit, took over for Jerry Cash. Cash accumulated 7 conference titles and 362 wins over a five decade career, including piloting TJCA to 10-win seasons six years in a row from 2014 to 2019.
"We're looking to continue the tradition they've had here and that's making the playoffs and trying to make deep runs," stated Shuford before a preseason practice.
The statistical voids are glaring, but Shuford feels comfortable with guys ready for their time to shine.
Starting quarterback Bryce Jergenson graduated, as did the top three rushers and top two pass-catchers.
"We've got a couple players who didn't touch the ball a whole lot last year that are great players," mused Shuford. "David Hargro is an excellent receiver. Excellent receiver. He's one of the best I've ever coached and you know I've coached a lot of kids."
Shuford also pointed to running back Holden Weatherford, who was the top underclassmen in both receiving and rushing yards a year ago.
Thomas Jefferson opens the 2022 season on the road against Draughn on August 19th.
