A woman in Northeast Portland has been running a food pantry out of her home for more than 20 years. She and her family are stepping up once again to help those struggling with food insecurity, as things like groceries and gas continue to rise due to inflation.
“It doesn’t matter your economic status, hunger doesn’t take a vacation,” said Colise Johnson.
Johnson has epilepsy and other medical issues, and often uses a wheelchair to get around.
But that hasn’t stopped her for the past two decades from helping those in need.
“This has nothing to do with being a hero. It has to do with filling a need. Some people cannot do this. We can, therefore we do," Johnson said.
Johnson and her husband collect donations throughout the year to stock their GAP pantry, which stands for “God Always Provides.” They collect cans and bottles to exchange for cash to supplement the items they don’t get through donations. You can reach out to her at j.colise@yahoo.com for more information.
GAP serves more than 300 families per week.
