Suspended USA police chief resigns; university won’t say if situation is resolved

Following the resignation of University of South Alabama’s police chief, it remains unclear whether an unspecified “personnel matter” is a closed case or not.

Longtime USA chief Zeke Aull was placed on administrative leave in early June; a university statement issued at the time said the move was made “pending the resolution of a personnel matter.” School officials declined to make further comment at the time.

Earlier this week, the university community received a brief statement from Mike Mitchell, USA’s vice president for student affairs and dean of students. It said that Capt. Phil Fishel would continue as interim leader of the USA Police Department following Aull’s resignation, which was effective immediately.

Mitchell’s statement thanked Fishel and the rest of the university police department “for their continued service to the University community.”

It did not offer any insight as to whether the “personnel matter” that had led to Aull being placed on leave was resolved. University spokesman Lance Crawford said he had no additional information beyond what was in Mitchell’s statement.

Asked whether the university now considered the matter concluded, or if there was still some investigation or administrative proceeding under way, Mitchell said Wednesday that the University had no further comment.
