2022 FedEx St. Jude Championship picks: Seamus Power tops long shot bets

The race for the 2022 FedEx Cup kicks into high gear on Thursday with the St. Jude Championship at TPC Southwind in Memphis, Tenn. The field consists of the top 125 players on the PGA TOUR, with Rory McIlroy standing out as the betting favorite at +1000.

Even though there are plenty of stars missing out this week because of their obligations to another professional golf tour, the field this week is loaded with starpower. Joining McIlroy at the top of the board are Scottie Scheffler (+1500), Cam Smith (+1600), Patrick Cantlay (+1600), Justin Thomas (+1800), Xander Schauffele (+1800) and Jon Rahm (+2000).

Even though this field is packed with star power, we’ve seen some surprising names pop on the leaderboard in the FedEx Cup opener in the past. Heck, last year we saw Top-10 finishes from Tom Hoge, Alex Noren, Erik Van Rooyen, Keith Mitchell and Kevin Na in the first leg of the three-week chase.

Here are three longshots worth a punt to upset the odds at the 2022 St. Jude Championship at TPC Southwind:

Seamus Power (+10000, BetMGM)

It’s been a bit of a breakout for Seamus Power this season. Although he doesn’t have a win on TOUR in 2022, he’s been plenty solid with seven top-20 finishes in 16 stroke-play events. Power’s got plenty of volatility to him — he’s missed the cut in three of his last seven events — but’s he’s clearly got a high ceiling. The Irishman has also performed admirably in strong fields, finishing T9 at the PGA Championship and T12 at the U.S. Open. There were tournaments this year where Power went off in the 40/1 range, so you’re getting a great number this week due to the strength of the field.

Mito Pereira (+12500, BetMGM)

After coughing up a late lead at the 2022 PGA Championship, things have gone relatively quiet around Mito Pereira, and for good reason. The 27-year-old Chilean has missed four cuts on the spin and has played 15-over par in his last eight rounds combined.

Unsurprisingly, Pereira now finds his odds back in the triple-digits after going off in the 40/1 range in similar fields not too long ago. And even though the form is quite scary, Pereira’s last two missed cuts came in tough tournaments – the first of the two came at the U.S. Open, and his most recent missed cut took place overseas in Scotland at The Open. Those are excusable results and could provide a great buy-low spot across all formats and markets on a player who ranks 13th in Strokes Gained: Approach, 23rd in SG: off the tee and 15th in SG: Tee to green this season.

Brendan Steele (+15000, BetMGM)

A regular in this column, Brendan Steele ticks all the boxes you look for when searching for a longshot.

After missing the cut in his first five starts in 2022, Steele has only missed the weekend once in his last nine stroke-play events. In that span, the 39-year-old has posted two top-10 finishes — both of which came in events with deep fields (PGA Championship, The Memorial) — and he’s only finished outside the top-30 twice.

Steele ranks fifth on TOUR in Strokes Gained: Off the tee, 44th in SG: Approach and 27th in SG: Tee to green, but his putting can go off the rails incredibly quickly. If he can sink a few putts this week, he’ll be well worth this price.
