Syracuse, N.Y. — About 25 firefighters were called Wednesday afternoon to a house engulfed in flames in the city’s Valley neighborhood.

The fire at the two-story home at 217 Searlwyn Road was reported at about 2:18 p.m. Firefighters first saw the front of the house consumed by the fire with smoke pouring from the top floor, Syracuse Fire Department District Chief Mark Hatch said.

They immediately began spraying the fire from the outside, Hatch said. That took down most of the fire, he said. Firefighters went inside to put out the remaining flames, he said.

The fire left heat and smoke damage throughout the house, but most of it was concentrated to the front, Hatch said.

The two people who lived in the home were alerted by neighbors to the fire, Hatch said. No injuries were reported, he said.

Sabrina Harper, who lives across the street, first noticed her power go out before she saw the fire and called 911. A woman who lives next to Harper said her power had also gone out.

Fire investigators are determining how the fire started.
