Southwest is having a sale of up to 40% off base fares when you use the code SAVE40 for flights to or from California, Hawaii and select continental U.S. and international destinations.

We're finding that, whether we apply the promo code or not, we see the same rates. To be safe, we'd recommend booking by the end of the sale, which is Aug. 10 at 11:59 p.m. CDT.

Play around with this deal and see what you can find. We were pleasantly surprised by the prices.

Sample flights

While Southwest says it's having a sale of 40% off base fares to or from California, Hawaii and select continental U.S. and international destinations, it seems like that SAVE40 promo isn't further discounting already reduced flights, but there are some good deals.

For example, we found all these routes for great prices:

  • Long Beach Airport (LGB) to Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS), starting at $107.
  • Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) to Miami International Airport (MIA), starting at $138.
  • LaGuardia Airport (LGA) to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL), starting at $144.
  • Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) to LGA, starting at $195.
  • San Francisco International Airport (SFO) to MIA, starting at $202.
  • LAX to Licenciado Gustavo Díaz Ordaz International Airport (PVR), for $214.
  • Midway International Airport (MDW) to Charleston International Airport (CHS), starting at $239.

For LGB to AUS, we searched the Low Fare Calender to find this $107 round-trip journey.

The nonstop flight from BWI to MIA $138, departing on Sept. 7 and returning on Sept. 13.

From LGA to ATL is also a nonstop flight, starting at $144 for the same dates.

The LAX-to-LGA route that we found starting at $195 is for travel from Sept. 14 to Sept. 20. For this long of a flight, we're impressed with the price point.

For an international flight, LAX to PVR for just $214 is pretty impressive by our standards, even with a layover.

Charleston, South Carolina, is a hot tourist destination this summer, and if you're based in Chicago, you can get there for $239 on a nonstop Southwest flight.

These prices are pretty widespread with lots of route options. If you're looking to go somewhere, we suggest trying it out on the site to see if you can find a good deal.

Maximize your purchase

Don't forget to use a card that earns bonus points on airfare purchases, such as The Platinum Card® from American Express, which earns 5 points per dollar on airfare booked directly with the airline or through American Express Travel, on up to $500,000 on these purchases per calendar year. The Citi Premier® Card (see rates and fees) and the Chase Sapphire Reserve earn 3 points per dollar on airfare, while the American Express® Gold Card earns 3 points per dollar on airfare when booked directly with the airline or through Amex Travel. Alternatively, you could use the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card which earns 2 points per dollar on travel. Check out this post for more on maximizing airfare purchases.

Bottom line

We're pretty impressed with these prices from Southwest — and not just when using the SAVE40 promo code. While it's not super clear which U.S. destinations are included in the deal, it's worth giving it a shot if you're looking to travel domestically.

Unfortunately, we didn't have much luck with flights to and from Hawaii.

Since it's not clear if this sale is what's causing these good prices, you may want to book by the recommended time of 11:59 p.m. CDT. However, you might get lucky and find that these prices last even longer.
