Jackson police leaders are making their case for a big bump in pay for officers.
City leaders were looking at the possibility of a $5 million tax increase during Wednesday's City Council Finance Committee meeting.
"We are looking at that and trying to be competitive. The difficulty is that we know we have several employees that are deserving of increases: public works, fire department — throughout the city in every division it is needed," Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba said.
Police Chief James Davis said the tax increase could provide a substantial boost to the Jackson Police Department and its efforts to keep officers from leaving.
"I tell you what, you jump up from $30,000 or $31,000 to $50,000 starting, that is a major pay increase for our officers, because we work harder than any officer here in the state of Mississippi," Davis said.
The chief said JPD has lost 54 officers since last October.
The Jackson City Council budget discussions come up later this year.
