Update 8/11/22: Pennsylvania State Police have identified the suspect who died as Jordan Charles Urenovitch, a 23-year-old white male.
=====================================================
An officer-involved shooting in Luzerne County left one wanted man dead. Officials said it happened outside of 22nd St Auto Center in Hazle Township after the suspect opened fire on police.
It happened this afternoon around 12:40 p.m. when officials attempted to arrest the suspect.
“The United States Marshals Fugitive Task Force were in the Hazleton surrounding areas looking for a wanted individual wanted on gun and drug charges by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives," said Trooper Anthony Petroski of the Pennsylvania State Police.
Police said the suspect was located traveling in his vehicle, he then entered the autobody shop.
“At that point, a member from the task force discharged their service weapon striking the individual. Once they did, they immediately rendered medical aid until he was transported to Lehigh Valley Haven Hospital. Unfortunately, he did die from his injuries," said Petroski.
The Luzerne County District Attorney’s Office and the Troop N major case team are conducting a joint investigation into the officer-related shooting to determine whether or not it was justified.
“It's unfortunate what happened to the suspect they were trying to take him into custody, so he could deal with his charges accordingly. No officer wants this to happen," said Petroski.
“So this is not new, but it is sad, definitely," said longtime Hazleton resident, Amilcar Arroyo as he reacted to the news.
“We need more funds to the police. This is a growing area and is just the beginning. It will be growing," said Arroyo.
Officers said that because this was an isolated incident, there is no threat to the community.
The identity of the suspect and the police officer involved in the shooting have not been released.
The incident is still under investigation.
