OKALOOSA COUNTY, Fla. -- Wednesday will mark 20 years since a 15-year-old girl was killed in a fatal hit-and-run in Okaloosa County. Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office investigators continue to look into the case that remains unsolved.
While vacationing in Destin, Michelle "Shelly" Meadors was killed in a fatal hit-and-run after being struck while standing on the sidewalk waiting to cross Highway 98.
The Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office says Shelly's mother has moved away from the pain of losing her child and has now moved to a path of forgiveness with a simple request to get answers as to what happened the day Shelly was killed.
"We've received several tips over the years, which we have investigated, and unfortunately they haven't panned out," Sgt. Dan Genrich, Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office investigator said. "However, we know that somebody knows something. And that person has yet to come forward with the information that we need to close this case. And we would hope 20 years later maybe that enough time has passed for whatever reason that was causing them to hesitate to now come forward and give us what we need to get this case closed."
Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office hopes whoever was involved in the incident will come forward to give peace to Shelly's family.
"We want to give them the closure they need," Sgt. Genrich said.
