Essential workers in Connecticut may be eligible for up to a $1,000 payment through a new program established by the state legislature.
Eligible workers in the private sector who were employed during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic can apply for the “hero” payment through the Premium Pay Program.

The Premium Pay Program was approved and funded with $30 million by the Connecticut General Assembly and Gov. Ned Lamont earlier this year to support the workforce that helped keep the state operational through the coronavirus pandemic.
“There is a great need and demand for this Premium Pay program – and I’m looking forward to officially launching the program,” said Connecticut State Comptroller Natalie Braswell in a statement obtained by NBC. “The Premium Pay program will provide much-deserved relief to Connecticut’s essential workers.”
In order to qualify, employees must have been designated as essential workers by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and were employed in Connecticut between March 10, 2020, and May 7, 2022. They also cannot have earned over $149,999. Some occupations that qualify include grocery store workers and healthcare workers.
Those employed by a federal, state, or municipal government agency do not qualify, and so police officers and firefighters are excluded.

Any eligible essential worker has until Oct. 1, 2022, to apply for the payment. The amount of payment that one receives depends on their income level. Payments will start going out in early 2023.
