Theft Victim in Monticello has Passport Returned Following Exhaustive Investigation by Shmira

A woman was reunited with her passport last weekend, after it was stolen from a vehicle that was robbed in broad daylight. It was located following a relentless investigation by Shmira Volunteers who did not give up until they identified and located the perpetrator.

The saga began on July 24, when the theft victim parked his car in a Monticello shopping center parking lot. The thief lurked nearby until he was gone, and then proceeded to pry open his trunk, leaving with a briefcase, which contained the passport, among other valuables.

Catskills Shmira was called to the scene, and soon found the discarded briefcase in a dumpster across the street. The passport, however, was gone—while its owner was scheduled to leave the country the following week.

Gathering surveillance footage from a number of nearby establishments, Shmira soon had a photo and video of the perpetrator, which it passed around to all its members.

On the way to a call one week later, Shmira members located the perp, who had been known to local law enforcement for a while. They pursued him, and were eventually able to locate him. Monticello Police was soon on the scene, and persuaded him to hand over the passport which he did immediately—bringing the two-week saga to a positive conclusion.
