GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) - ECU Health is holding a hiring event Wednesday and Thursday in the midst of hospitals nationwide dealing with nursing shortages.

A spokesperson for the hospital says 700 people registered for the Wednesday event alone.

The ECU Health Career Expo is at the Greenville Convention Center on Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Thursday, in person from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and virtually from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Registration has been closed for Wednesday but is still possible for Thursday. Locations for in-person hiring events on Thursday can be found here.

Daphne Brewington, ECU Health chief nursing officer, explained the need for hiring more nurses, especially just a few weeks after Martin General Hospital closed down its ICU.

“Not just nursing shortages, we have shortages across every facet of health care, so today’s fair provides us an opportunity to those positions that are available at ECU Health Medical Center, ECU Beaufort, and ECU Health Edgecombe,” Brewington said.

The chief nursing officer added that the system is combatting shortages by offering positions for international nurses, nutrition, and other roles at better rates. Still, how long would it take to get hired?

“Today provides an opportunity to be able to be hired on the spot,” Brewington said. “We have everybody in place to make that a reality.”

One of the people that was offered a second interview was Zharenity Staton, who recently graduated from a nurse assistant class.

“They gave me a second interview for patient access rep and they said they’ll either call me in a week or I’ll call them in a week for my second interview,” Staton said.

Staton is from Greenville and hopes to start her career in Eastern Carolina where nurses are needed the most: rural areas.

“I’m going to basically grow here first,” Staton said. “Get established, get financially stable, get a career and job I can keep for awhile and then maybe I’ll move on, but I’m here for now.”
