Construction for the future, and popular pizzas

The Providence Journal

Hello everyone!

Construction goes on all year round in Rhode Island it seems. But summer weather is much better than winter if you are going to put up any kind of structure. For a Journal story this week, photographer David DelPoio spent some time with some young people who were building a shade structure at a school in Central Falls. It is part of a pre-apprentice program that helps prepare students for careers in the trades.

Christian Rodrigues works on a shade structure near the playground at Calcutt Middle School in Central Falls. He is learning construction techniques through Building Futures Rhode Island, a pre-apprenticeship program that feeds workers into the trade unions.

And if you are outdoors working, what would be better at the end of the day than a  delicious pizza ? Paul Parker wrote about the favorite toppings of the popular pies here in Rhode Island. As it turns out, pepperoni, sausage and mushrooms are among the top picks. David went out to a local pizzeria to photograph a fresh out of the oven dish.

Photographer Kris Craig was at the Dominican Festival in Providence this past week. Marchers in the parade were decked out in dazzling costumes. Despite the hot weather, a large crowd was on hand. Broad Street was alive with music and dance. In addition to photos that went in the print edition of the Journal and on providencejournal.com, you can see a video that Kris did to hear the sounds of the parade as well.

The housing market is always of interest to readers of the Journal. David visited a house in Jamestown this week that will soon be the subject of our house of the week feature. Photographers are given a thorough tour of each property we visit, and do a gallery of the photos for providencejournal.com.

The coastal contemporary home, at 150 America Way in Jamestown, has three bedrooms, private deeded access at Cranston Cove, passage rights to Rainbow Pond and nature trails.
