Locally, the primary election last week was highlighted by the results
of the Barton County Commission races. Each of the three districts up for
election this year were contested.
Now the focus for Barton County Election Officer Bev Schmeidler and her staff
is getting prepared for the General Election in November.
Duane Reif, Tricia Schlessiger and Donna Zimmerman all received
nominations to go on to the General Election, winning those contested races Aug. 2 for county commission. Those three names will appear on the ballot in
November and someone could do a write-in campaign for those races.
Schmeidler said the county commission races appeared in the primary election
because they were contested. Now those winners will join the rest of the school
board and city council candidates in November’s election.
With no Democrats filing for the county commission races this year, Reif, Schlessiger and Zimmerman will appear on the General Election as unopposed.
"Registration will open back up and people can change their party, but in November everyone will have the same ballot," said Schmeidler. "It won't be party specific. It's too late to get their name on there as a Democrat. That primary has passed. It could just be a write-in campaign and it wouldn't matter what party you were."
The only races elected in the primary election were precinct committeemen and
precinct committeewomen.
The General Election is Nov. 8.
