Three people are dead after a man opened fire on his ex-girlfriend and her suspected partner at a Narcotics Anonymous meeting Monday night near Daytona Beach, Florida, police said.
The Edgewater Police Department got a 911 call at 7 p.m. that someone had been shot at Bridge the Gap, a non-profit organization. A Narcotics Anonymous meeting had been in session with about 20 people in attendance.
Police said after the meeting started, 49-year-old Quinton Hunter entered the building and shot 59-year-old Ian Greenfield at close-range, killing Greenfield. Attendees ran away while Hunter took his ex-girlfriend, 33-year-old Erica Hoffman, hostage as she tried to leave.
Officers said Hunter was angry with his ex Hoffman being in a relationship with Greenfield.
Edgewater police said the Southeast Volusia Regional SWAT Team and Negotiations Team mobilized to try to diffuse the situation. Both units tried to reach Hunter but there was no response from inside the building.
Eventually, the SWAT team entered and found Greenfield, Hoffman and Hunter dead in the meeting room, police said. Greenfield and Hoffman appeared to have suffered multiple gunshot wounds and lacerations, while Hunter appeared to have killed himself.
In a news conference, officers said the relationship between Hoffman and Greenfield might have been the reason for the shooting.
"Mr. Hunter is the ex-boyfriend of Ms. Hoffman and we believe that Mr. Greenfield formed a new relationship with her. We don't have the status of that. It may have been just a friendship," said police.
