Winder updates rates for water, sewer, and sanitation

By Lawson Smith Anchor/Reporter

The City of Winder has announced updated rates for the city's water, sewer, and sanitation services. These rates will go into effect September 1, 2022.

According to a press release, these updated rates are the result of a detailed water and sewer rate study conducted in Spring of 2022. This study was used to predict future needs for the city’s infrastructure and other operations.

Winder’s Utilities Department has found it necessary to replace older pipes, meters, and water lines, as well as obtain newer equipment to continue to meet the needs of increased water customers and provide fire protection.

It has been estimated that this project will require $40 million to “meet projected capacity as well as to produce, treat, store, and distribute water to customers,” the press release said.

Roger Wilhelm, who served as the city’s utilities director from 2009 until 2022, said that this is a proactive approach that will ensure that the sewer system will continue to be able to meet the needs of customers. Tabatha Knight, Winder’s current  Utilities Operations Director also explained that these rates are essential to keep water flowing to customers saying: “Planning ahead and working to anticipate our customers’ needs will allow us to continue improving the water and sewer systems with expansion and rehabilitation projects. Many of our projects require the relocation of underground utility lines to accommodate road improvements and when we can plan for those instances it saves time and taxpayer money.”

Winder’s utility and sanitation customers will receive an updated rate sheet in their August online and paper statement. Information about these updated rates can also be found online at https://www.cityofwinder.com/Updated-Fees-Schedule
