Red Cross handing out flood cleanup kits to impacted residents

FREEPORT, Ill. (WTVO) — Several streets in the City of Freeport were still underwater on Wednesday after heavy rain hit the area for multiple days.

In response to the high water levels, the Red Cross is giving out “Flood Clean Up Kits” to those that have been impacted by the weather. The kits are being given out at St. John United Church of Christ, 1010 S. Park Blvd. Each kit contains bleach, gloves and trash bags, different items needed to deal with cleaning up after a flood.

The senior pastor of the church said that nearly everyone is feeling the impacts of the flood, including many in his congregation.

“They said they had 4 feet of standing water in their basement, they’re starting to get the recovery done. They had a couple of sump pumps pulling water out, but we know that that’s a slow process, you can’t pull it out too quickly, it can damage the house,” said Reverend Hank Fairman. :So yeah, members of the congregation, members of the community, this is county wide.

The Red Cross handed out the kits from 12-3 p.m. Wednesday, and will hand them out from 3-6 p.m. Thursday.
