Two Dunn Building Company workers were trapped 60 feet in the air for about two hours in Birmingham Wednesday when their lift malfunctioned.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service was dispatched to the scene just before 9:30 a.m. The location was a self-storage building in the 900 block of 28th Street North.
Andrew Edwards, president of Dunn Building, said a team was working to put a new roof on the storage building. Two foremen of the metal roofing crew were in a lift that ended up too close to a power line and the lift’s control shorted out.
At that point, the workers were about 60 feet in the air and unable to get back down. At least five other workers were on the roof of the storage building, also unable to get down.
Alabama Power was brought in to shut down to make sure the lines were de-energized. Power workers used a second lift to get the men down.
The rescue took place about 11:15 a.m., roughly two hours after the men became trapped in the air.
Once the men were down, Birmingham Fire and Rescue was on standby to check them out. Both men were fine and declined medical treatment.
