Duty Death: Riley Daniel Ray Huiras - [Grand Rapids Volunteer Fire Department]

GRAND RAPIDS, Wis. — Firefighter Riley Daniel Ray Huiras died Wednesday, Aug. 3. He responded to two calls in a row on July 30, went home and reportedly suffered a brain aneurysm early on July 31.
Huiras served with the Grand Rapids Volunteer Fire Department and was a member of the Grand Rapids Police Department’s Auxiliary Unit, the Wisconsin Rapids Daily Tribune reported. Funeral services were held Saturday.
“Through this service, Riley bravely stood with the men and women of the Grand Rapids Fire Department and Grand Rapids Police Department and touched the lives of countless people in our community,” Fire Chief Robert Piatt told OnFocus. “This is a terribly sad time for the Grand Rapids Fire Department and Grand Rapids Police Department. We are grieving the loss of one of our team members and know he will be missed by many.”

Huiras responded to a fire on July 30, and on his way back from the fire, a call came for a motor vehicle crash, according to USFA. He and another crewmember responded to the crash scene.
Huiras suffered a brain aneurysm between 2 and 6 a.m. on July 31, and his own fire department transported him to the hospital where he died on Aug. 3.
His father, Kevin Huiras, has served with the Grand Rapids Volunteer Fire Department for 20 years, and Huiras grew up helping around the station.
Huiras began volunteering for the fire department a year ago, the chief said. Huiras took classes to be a law enforcement officer in the daytime and served as a firefighter at night.
“In June, he took the state certification test and passed his firefighter one, literally a month and a half ago,” Piatt said.
