You just can’t make this stuff up. The board gets close to approving a homeless camp and has to start over because Supervisor Wendy Thomas forgot that she owns a number of properties on Broadway but didn’t recuse herself.

But that’s only one problem. Next the supervisors want to place this homeless camp on Perks Court leading onto Missouri Flat Road. A member of the Diamond Springs Fire Board testified that there are already too many automobile vs. pedestrian accidents on Missouri Flat. How many homeless being hit will be enough?
We know the property is an old gas station/auto repair facility. Steel gas tanks are buried in ground and will need to be mitigated as a EPA cleanup site (unless it becomes a Super Site). How many millions will have to be spent to clean it up? Not to mention the roads that would have to be improved. This project was suppose to be finished before this year’s fire season started. Missed that one!
The sheriff has proposed using the property next to the jail, putting in tiny homes (6-foot by 10 foot – suggested by Supervisor George Turnboo). The homeless have testified before the Human Rights Commission that their main concern is safety from rape, theft and beatings. Cold and hunger came after that. The Health and Human Services assistant director thinks his “clients” won’t be comfortable being so close to the jail. Really.
Using Volunteers of America as the supervising agency is good but putting them at such a disadvantage as being responsible for pedestrian safety when their clients are off campus and maybe using drugs or alcohol is ridiculous. And let’s not forget the safety of the kids at Herbert Green Elementary School just down the street. VOA should insist that this center be placed by the EDC jail for the safety of their clients.
