Swamp Rabbit Trail vandalized overnight in Greenville

GREENVILLE COUNTY, S.C. (WSPA) – The Greenville Police Department said a portion of the Swamp Rabbit Trail was vandalized overnight.

Police said a large amount of graffiti had been painted on trash cans, trails, exercise equipment and more. The obscenities stretched from the tennis courts to the Julie Valentine memorial in the Cleveland Park area.

“Usually, we’ll see a little bit here, a little bit there,” Greenville Police Sgt. Michelle Lentz said. “But just the amount of it this time and the area it covered – just such a large area – it’s definitely unusual to see that amount of damage.”

Officers responded to the location, completed a report and took photographs of the damage.

Police said they will not be releasing photographs of the damage due to the obscene nature of the graffiti.

City of Greenville crews spent hours removing the racist and obscene graffiti Wednesday.

However, many park visitors saw the vandalism before it was scrubbed away.

“I wasn’t paying much attention but then I saw the swastika,” runner Bess Bridwell said. “The rest of it is kind of standard vandalism stuff. But that racist imagery and stuff is really disturbing.”

The vandalism is under investigation by police.
