A 15-year-old in Hawaii used a Midlands student's name to make false school threats, according to Kershaw County Sheriff Lee Boan.
The student told authorities the recent threats to Lugoff-Elgin High School were made by someone in Hawaii that he'd been communicating with on the phone.
Officials say the teen told the student he was going to make the threats.
This led authorities to a fake Instagram account using the student's identity.
According to Boan, this isn't the first time this incident has happened with this same student.
"There have been multiple incidents in the past where fake accounts are being created with the student's name and school threats are going out," Boan said.
Officials are trying to determine why that is happening.
Officials have reported the fake Instagram account multiple times but have not been able to get the account removed.
The Kershaw County Sheriff's Office is also working with SLED and the FBI in the case.
