Rep. Jackie Walorski funeral procession route detailed for Thursday afternoon

Ceremonies to mourn the death of former U.S. Rep. Jackie Walorski conclude with her public funeral service, set to begin at 11 a.m. Thursday.

Organizers have announced the route the funeral procession will take, including sites recommended for members of the public wishing to pay their respects.

Doors open for the funeral at 10 a.m. Thursday at Granger Community Church, 630 E. University Drive, Mishawaka. Walorski's service begins in the Granger church's auditorium at 11 a.m. and is expected to end by 12:30 p.m. A procession will then leave the church and take the congresswoman to be buried at Southlawn Cemetery, 61430 U.S. 31, South Bend.

The burial ceremony is open to the public and to be handled by the U.S. Army. It will include a flag folding, a gun volley and the playing of taps. At the cemetery, Walorski's casket will be transferred to a horse-drawn carriage and taken to the burial site.

The procession, led by a police escort, will make the 15-mile trip by leaving the church and heading east on Cleveland Road, then turning right on Capital Avenue. That road will be taken south to Kern Road, where the vehicles will turn and go west to the cemetery at 61430 U.S. 31. The trip will take at least 30 minutes, with a planned arrival time around 1 p.m.

A recommended area for residents to watch the procession is Grissom Middle School, at the intersection of Kern and Elm Roads. The vehicles are expected to pass that site between 12:30 and 1 p.m. A garrison flag will be suspended above the roadway between two fire engines at the intersection of Jackson and Elm roads, just north of the school.

The visitation for Zachery Potts, the former St. Joseph County Republican Party chair who died alongside Walorski, begins at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Calvary Tabernacle, 606 N. Elm St., in Three Oaks, Michigan. His memorial service starts at 1 p.m.
