A procession honored fallen Wayne County Deputy Sergeant Matthew Fishman before he was laid to rest.
Fishman was killed in the line of duty in a shooting last Monday. The shooting also injured 2 other Wayne County Deputies who, following a stay at ECU Health, are now recovering at home.
People lined the 10-mile procession route on US 117 today to honor Sergeant Matthew Fishman, who gave the ultimate sacrifice.
The route was full of first responders from across the state, people who knew him well, and those who didn’t know him personally.
But no matter how they knew him, they all said they felt it was only right to show up for Sergeant Fishman and say one last thank you.
Before the procession began Myranda Reese was hard at work decorating a poster to pay her final respects to Sergeant Fishman.
“Cause we love him, we love him.” Reese said, “We wanted him to know that we were here for him and his family”
It was her way to show Sergeant Fishman’s Family she supports them and she’s mourning his loss with them.
“Anybody that knew him, that even knew about him is feeling this way” Reese continued, “we are gonna put shiny blue red and while stars on it so hopefully it will stick out and the family will see it and feel all warm and happy inside. We all love their family, we didn’t personally get to meet them, but we love Matt so they’re family to us too “
As she put her final touches on the sign, the procession was within eyesight. Myranda held tight onto her sign like her memories of the sergeant who protected her.
Every time he would come in, he would give us a huge smile and say hey y’all. He was just a great guy we love working with him he was a hometown, Goldsboro guy.
A man of faith- and a well-respected officer- Sergeant Fishman received a burial with full honors.
As his flag draped casket made its way to his final resting site. Myranda found the strength to say her final farewell, “I’ll be here and stand tall for him.”
Sergeant Fishman leaves behind a wife and children, many people in attendance said his sacrifice will never be forgotten.
