Hospitalizations due to COVID-19 declined in West Virginia on Wednesday after nearly topping 400 the day before.
The state’s hospitalization total dropped by 16 to 383, according to the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources. Intensive care admissions increased by one to 62 and the number of people on ventilators dropped by three to 12.
Health officials also reported nine new virus-related deaths on Wednesday, pushing the state’s total during the pandemic to 7,201. The deaths were:
- a 71-year-old man from Barbour County
- a 72-year-old man from Kanawha County
- a 58-year-old man from Randolph County
- an 84-year-old woman from Mason County
- a 97-year-old woman from Braxton County
- a 97-year-old man from Mercer County
- a 66-year-old man from Monroe County
- a 91-year-old woman from Lincoln County
- an 80-year-old woman from Ohio County
West Virginia's active case total moved up slightly from 3,066 to 3,111 with the addition of 1,074 new positive cases for the day. The cumulative positive test rate continued to inch upwards to 8.38% while the daily positive test rate was 8.67%.
Forty-one counties remained yellow in the DHHR’s daily alert map. Three counties – Wyoming, Mercer and Hardy – were gold. The remaining counties – Summers, Pleasants, Gilmer, Lewis, Randolph, Pendleton, Tucker, Taylor, Preston, Morgan and Brooke – were green.
