Hydro-Eakly falls in opener 12-2

HYDRO — Calumet used two big late innings to beat Hydro-Eakly, 12-2, in the season opener for both baseball teams Monday.

Calumet opened the scoring in the top of the first with two runs on an RBI double to right field and an RBI single.

Hydro-Eakly scored a run in the bottom of the fourth inning to cut the lead in half. Calynn Henderson led off the inning with a walk. Three batters later, Xavier Sambrano walked to put runners on first and third with two outs. Henderson scored as Caleb Warner singled, cutting the lead to 2-1.

Calumet scored six runs in the top of the fifth inning on a two-RBI single to left field, a two-RBI double to center field and two runs on an error, giving the Chieftains an 8-1 lead.

Hydro-Eakly added a run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Kaden Harris led off the inning with a double to right field. Three batters later, he scored on a pick-off attempt at third base. It was 8-2 Calumet.

The Chieftains scored four runs in the top of the sixth inning on a balk, an RBI single to left field, a RBI single to center field and a run scored on a sacrifice ground ball out, which resulted in a double play with an out being made at home.

Calumet was able to get three outs in the bottom half of the sixth inning to close out the game, 12-2, due to run rule.
