Weatherford softball opens season 3-0

ELK CITY — Weatherford softball opened the 2022 fast-pitch season with three wins Monday and Tuesday, beating Arnett, 3-0, Mangum, 9-1, and Minco, 4-0.

The Lady Eagles played a fourth game Tuesday against Woodward JV. The game was not finished as of deadline for the Wednesday edition.

Weatherford 3, Arnett 0

Marley Teasley pitched a no-hitter in the season opener against Arnett, a game in which Weatherford won, 3-0. She walked one batter and struck out 11 in the four-inning game.

Weatherford opened the scoring in the top of the second with a run.

Cydnee Henderson hit a solo home run over the wall in left field, giving the Lady Eagles the 1-0 lead. Dacey Morris and Kennedy Stewart each were hit by a pitch, but neither was able to score in the inning.

Weatherford added two runs in the top of the third inning.

Harlie Chism led off the inning with a triple to right field. She scored two batters later as Karsen McPherson reached base on a fielder’s choice play. Hayden Warren, who was pinch running for McPherson scored when Morris singled to right field, giving Weatherford the 3-0 lead. Both Carsyn Chase and Stewart also reached base in the inning, but neither was able to score a run.

Teasley finished the game, striking out all three batters in the bottom of the second inning, all three in the bottom of the third inning and all three in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Weatherford 9, Mangum

After falling behind early against Mangum, Weatherford scored nine runs in three innings and beat Mangum 9-1 in the second game Monday.

The Lady Tigers scored on a sacrifice ground ball out in the top of the first to go ahead 1-0.

In the bottom of the first inning, Weatherford took the lead for good, scoring four runs. Chism led off the inning hitting a solo home run over the wall in left field and tying the game, 1-1. Teasley walked and scored two batters later when Henderson tripled to center field. It was 2-1 Weatherford.

Henderson scored two batters later as Chase reached base on an error. Chase then scored as Stewart reached base on an error, giving the Lady Eagles the 4-1 lead.

Weatherford added four runs in the bottom of the second inning. Chism walked with one out and scored as Teasley doubled to left field. McPherson walked before Henderson singled to right field, scoring Teasley. McPherson scored when Morris singled to center field. Henderson scored a run during the next at bat on an error, making the score 8-1.

Weatherford added a run in the bottom of the third inning. Kaitlyn Bryant reached base on an error and Chism was intentionally walked. Jaden Bradley, who pinch-ran for Bryant, scored in the next at bats on a passed ball, giving the Lady Eagles the 9-1 lead.

Weatherford 4, Minco 0

Teasley gave up one hit in Tuesday’s first game against Minco and Weatherford won the game 4-0.

The Lady Eagles scored first in the top of the second inning. Henderson led off the inning with a double to left field. Two batters later, she scored when Chase singled to right field, giving Weatherford the early 1-0 lead. Stewart also hit a bunt single in the inning.

In the top of the fourth inning, Weatherford added three runs. McPherson, Henderson and Morris each drew a walk to lead off the inning. Three batters later, McPherson scored as Lanee Gilbert drew a walk. Bryant then walked, which scored Henderson, before Morris scored on a passed ball in the next at bat. The Lady Eagles were ahead 4-0.

Teasley faced only 16 batters, one above the minimum for a five-inning game. Minco’s lone hit was a triple to right field in the bottom of the fifth inning. Teasley struck five in the win.
