VILLA PARK, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A villa park man has been sentenced to eight years in prison for removing a GPS device he was wearing.

Bruce Berrier, 23 was doing time at the DuPage County jail on a weapons charge, but was granted a one-day furlough in January so he could attend his brother's funeral. Officials said while he was out, Berrier managed to cut off the electronic monitor he was wearing and disappeared for 11 days before being arrested.

Berrier was located at the Jewel-Osco in Glendale Heights and taken into custody on January 22.

“Mr. Berrier’s decision to remove his GPS monitor and run from the law in an attempt to avoid serving his previous ten-year sentence was a complete defiance of a judge’s order and a blatant show of disrespect for the criminal justice system which ultimately cost him eight more years of his life,” DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said in a statement.

Before being sentenced, Berrier apologized to the judge and insited he did not intend to remain on the loose.
