FINNEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities in Southwest Kansas conducted active shooter training this month in Garden City, according to a social media report from Garden City Police.

All Garden City officers,  personnel from the Finney County Sheriff’s Office and Kansas Highway Patrol participated.

The training was held at Horace Good Middle School, 1412 North Main Street in Garden City, and was designed to prepare the first responder to isolate, distract, and neutralize an active shooter.

In addition to instruction and evaluation, officers were faced with a variety of realistic, force-on-force scenarios they must work through.

The training is held annually in a school setting. "The safety of our children and community is of paramount importance, and while we hope this never happens, we will do everything possible to prepare officers to appropriately respond to an active shooter situation."

In 2022, there have been over 370 mass shootings in the United States, according to the Gun Violence Archive.
