A true professional.
Former New York Yankees slugger Luke Voit is settling in nicely with the Washington Nationals following last week’s trade deadline deal which sent him to D.C. as part of the Juan Soto blockbuster with the San Diego Padres.
“As much as it sucks going from a potential playoff spot to already out of it, I’ve still got to play the game hard, go out there [and] try to make these guys better,” Voit said, per MLB.com. “I know it’s a really young team, and I would say I’m a veteran guy, so I want to be there for these guys.”

In six games with the last-place Nationals, Voit is hitting .350 with a pair of home runs. And he’s made a great impression on those in the clubhouse.
“He’s a good guy,” Anibal Sánchez said. ... “He’s a great teammate so far. I never knew the guy, but the way that he plays, he’s good.”
“He’s been great, he really has,” manager Dave Martinez said. “And what I love about him [is] he’s been a good teammate, he’s been a good clubhouse guy in there. He’s got a lot of energy, so he’s done well since he’s been here. ... He’s a student of the game, he understands the game. He’s been there for our younger guys and talking and he’s been a lot of fun.”

On the field, Voit has 15 home runs this season, his most since leading the majors with 22 in the COVID-shortened 2020 season. With the Nationals out of playoff contention, Voit is focused on leading by example.
“Obviously, there are a lot of young guys,” Voit said. “But I’ve always been a leader. I’ve always voiced my opinions in the locker room, and I want to create a good culture moving forward with this organization. Hopefully, we can get something rolling into next Spring Training.”
According to Spotrac, the 31-year-old Voit is under team control through 2024.
