A discount grocer recently shuttered a second location in the Charleston area this year.
Save A Lot at 5060 Dorchester Road in the recently upgraded and renamed Shoppes at Montague Corners, formerly Oak Ridge Plaza, has joined a store in Goose Creek that also closed earlier this year.
Each store is owned independently and the owner chose not to renew the lease, said company spokeswoman Sarah Griffin.
The latest closure leaves one Save A Lot store for the Missouri-based grocer in the Lowcountry at 4411 Durant Ave. in North Charleston.
What's cooking?
A Florida-based chicken chain that announced two years ago it planned to open four locations in the Charleston area is now upfitting its first Lowcountry restaurant.
Huey Magoo's Chicken Tenders is renovating a former Hardee's restaurant at 4954 Centre Pointe Drive in The Shoppes at Centre Pointe near Tanger Outlets in North Charleston.
Construction workers with the general contractor, Shafer Group of Summerville, have gutted the inside of the 2,732-square-foot building over the past three weeks. An opening is tentatively planned for late October.
The company has one other location in South Carolina in Greenville.
The restaurant chain has 30 other restaurants in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, Ohio and Tennessee. Eleven others soon will open in Florida, Georgia, Nevada and North Carolina.
In the works
A new bakery building with a drive-thru window hopes to soon be cooking in West Ashley.
Mae's Sweets with Soul plans to open at 3919 Savannah Highway. The city of Charleston's Design Review Board is considering the application.
Store in a store
A new partnership between two big-box retailers will bring a store-within-a-store pilot concept to the Charleston area.
Conn's HomePlus and Belk will host a grand opening celebration with giveaways, treats and music 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Aug. 13 for the new Conn's x Belk location in the Belk department store at 2064 Sam Rittenberg Blvd. at Citadel Mall in West Ashley.
The new collaborative format provides Belk customers with access to Conn’s assortment of furniture, home electronics and appliances, as well as next-day delivery.
"The great part about this partnership with Conn’s is that our customers now have access to products we didn’t sell in our stores," said Don Hendricks, interim CEO of Charlotte-based Belk.
The concept ranges from 10,000 square feet to 25,000 square feet, depending on the location. It's being incorporated into four other Belk stores, in Charlotte, Raleigh, Knoxville, Tenn., and Ridgeland, Miss. Others are expected to be announced.
New tenants
Two new tenants are coming to Citadel Mall.
Gracie Jiujitsu Charleston and Lillie’s of Charleston plan to open in the fall.
Gracie Jiujitsu Charleston, operated by Michael Key, will offer anti-bullying classes, women’s-only programming and other features. The studio will be next to Planet Fitness. Key called the location, near Interstate 526, Sam Rittenberg Boulevard and Savannah Highway, convenient and he plans to add classes.
Lillie’s of Charleston offers Southern and Lowcountry barbecue sauces, hot sauces and spice mixes, snacks, gift baskets and other items.
Owners Tracey and Jamel Richardson said they look forward to having an office and seasonal space in the shopping center. The new store will be set up where Foot Locker once operated between Target and MUSC.
Both spaces are being built for the new tenants.
Tool time
The city of Charleston's Design Review Board will consider a request by a big-box hardware retailer to do a little construction of its own. The Home Depot plans to add a tool rental center and restripe parking spaces for compact power equipment at its West Ashley store at 2008 Magwood Drive.
