EVERGREEN TWP., Mich. (WWJ) - A 31-year-old man was arrested by state police in Otsego County on Saturday after he allegedly hurled a sizeable rock out of his Jeep and ended up injuring a child in a nearby car.

Michigan State Police said troopers were dispatched to the area of McCoy Road in Evergreen Township around 7:26 p.m. on reports of an alleged felonious assault.

Troopers arrived on scene and found two vehicles, a truck and a Dodge Caravan, with damage caused by a rock and an injured 7-year-old girl.

The driver of the truck told police that he and his girlfriend were driving on Plywood Road with her two children when they saw his girlfriend's ex-boyfriend pass by in the opposite direction in his Jeep.

They saw the ex-boyfriend, Brandon Clifton of Gaylord, slam his brakes on, spin around and follow them.

The couple allege that Clifton passed them while on McCoy Road before he once again slammed his breaks on. They said Clifton grabbed a rock from his Jeep and threw it at their truck.

According to the couple, the boulder ricocheted off the truck and hit a Dodge Caravan that was traveling in the opposite direction. Police said the rock went through the windshield of the van and a 7-year-old girl sitting in the backseat was hit by flying glass.

The girl was said to have sustained minor injuries.

MSP said the rock Clifton allegedly threw was found in the van and seized by troopers for evidence.

Clifton was arrested and arraiged in Otsego County on the following counts:

• One count Assault with a Dangerous Weapon

• One count Malicious Destruction of Personal Property over $1,000 but less than $20,000

• Littering – Object in Vehicle Path

A judge in 87-B District Court set Clifton's bond at $2.000 cash surety.
