Police have charged the man accused of running down protestors with his car in Cedar Rapids earlier this summer.

54-year-old David Houston of Swisher is charged with Assault While Using or Displaying a Dangerous Weapon and Leaving the Scene of a Personal Injury Accident.

According to the Black Hawk County Attorney’s Office, on June 24th pro-choice protestors crossed Second Street near the United States Federal Courthouse. Surveillance video reportedly shows Houston approaching the protestors while in his vehicle. Although Houston had a green light, he appears to aggressively approach with his vehicle while the protestors remained on foot. Other vehicles in the area appear to simply wait for the protestors.

Police say there is no evidence that the incident was in any way politically motivated nor is there any evidence that the protestors were aggressive in any way towards any members of the public.

The offenses will be prosecuted by the Black Hawk County Attorney’s Office, but the case will be heard in Linn County.
