Rumor is this Friday evening a bunch of hoodlums are going to set up in Haldeman. There isn’t anything to worry about, though. These hoodlums are just going to hang out, talk about cars, and get themselves pumped up for their big show on Saturday at the Haldeman Community Center.
That event – the Hoodlums in the Holler car show – kicks off at 9 a.m. the following morning, Saturday, August 13. But this year, for the first time, they’re adding a Friday Night Hang Out for enthusiasts to visit and shoot the breeze.
“Friday night, we’re going to have a little get together for everyone who wants to come in early. Going to have some food, and music from Thomas Albert. Just a good chance to hang out and have some hotrod fellowship, if you will,” explained show organizer John Bailey.
At the show the next day those same enthusiasts can participate in contests and enjoy the displays. Awards will be presented for a model car contest and the Miss Hoodlum contest, as well as the car show itself.
“Mostly plastic, scale models,” Bailey said. “These though have categories for young children through adults, in up to 15 different classes. It’s hosted by the Kentucky Modeler’s Club. They host that for us.”
The cost for that entry is $5 for the first model, and $1 for every model after that.
The Miss Hoodlum contest is also open to all ages, Bailey said.
“It’s based on your outfit. Not costume. Outfit. And how period correct it is for the 40s, 50s, and 60s. And there is no entry fee for it. It’s hosted Ashley Markwell-Bowen.”
The car show, of course, is the big draw. It will feature custom prizes for hot rods in a variety of categories.
“Custom made rewards will be presented for 40 cars over 25 years old,” Bailey explained. They also award special awards to the judges’ ten favorite, or “the ten” as the club calls them, and special trophies for categories like paint jobs, engines, longest distance traveled, and “the one” or their best of show choice.
It’s a big year for the club this year as well, with the 40th anniversary.
“This is our 11th year doing Hoodlums in the Holler, but it’s our 40th year as a car club,” Bailey said.
It’s a big milestone, he noted, and a testament to the dedication of not only the club members, but their families as well. They all put in a lot of work to help make things happen as well, he said, and it’s a great family activity.
“Hopefully, with our member’s children, it will be around for another 40. As they have gotten older, they’ve taken on more and more. They built a lot of the trophies this year,” he continued. Adding with a laugh, “I know they’re looking forward to taking over my job.”
After a country breakfast starting at 7 a.m. registration opens and runs from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. with the event wrapping up at 4 p.m. Registration is $15 per entry, with the first 100 registrants getting a dash plaque and goody bag.
The model car contest starts at 10 a.m., games at 11, the Miss Hoodlum contest at 1 p.m., and music from Lucky Lance & the Stavedevils at 2.
