FLORISSANT, Mo. (KMOV) - A missing 2-year-old girl who was left inside a car that was stolen overnight in Florissant was found safe.

An AMBER Alert was issued for a 2-year-old girl after she was left unattended in a brown or dark-colored Hyundai Sonata outside an apartment in the 3300 block of Dunn Road just past 2:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Sgt. Adrian Washington with the St. Louis County Police Department said the mother drove to that building and she returned to her car to discover both her child and car were missing. Just before 6 a.m., a white Nissan belonging to the child’s uncle arrived at the scene with license plates matching what was issued in the AMBER Alert. It is unclear if one of the plates was stolen from the car or if the wrong numbers were given out.

St. Louis County Police said Amari was found safe 20 minutes later.

“No one is in custody right now,” Washington said. “We are actively looking for a suspect.”

Police began canvassing Woodwind Drive in Ferguson where they found the Sonata. A resident captured the suspect ditching the car behind his trailer on his Ring camera. The man, who wished to stay anonymous, said this wasn’t the first time stolen cars were dumped behind his trailer.
